Roberto Martinez squashes the Ronaldo naysayers

He is here for a reason not out of legacy, Portugal head coach defends 5-time Ballon d’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

A lot of narratives have been said lately about the age of Portugal icon, Cristiano Ronaldo with many questioning his impact on the pitch when playing at the top level, however Portugal national team head coach has squashed his critics.

Roberto Martinez in a recent address to journalist, defended Cristiano Ronaldo’s inclusion in his squad list for the Euro 2024 tournament.

The Portugal head coach amidst rising doubts staunchly defended his decision to include Cristiano Ronaldo in the squad for Euro 2024.

At 39 years old, Ronaldo’s selection has sparked considerable debate, but Martinez insists the veteran forward’s inclusion is based on merit.

Ronaldo’s impressive performance over the past season has been highlighted by Martinez, who pointed out that the star forward netted 44 goals in all competitions.

Ronaldo also finished as the second top scorer in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, contributing 10 goals to Portugal’s campaign.

“Cristiano is in the national team on merit. Nobody gets into the national team by just having a name. Cristiano scored 50 goals in 51 games – consistent with his club in his league – and he scored [10] goals in our qualification rounds,” Martinez stated emphatically.

Martinez emphasized Ronaldo’s enduring ability to influence games, noting his adaptability and continued prowess in front of goal.

“He’s a goalscorer and, for us, he’s someone who can make that final move. He can stretch defences and open spaces.

“Over the years, he has changed his way of playing slightly, but I can only say that Cristiano is in the national team on merit and the numbers are there to back that up.”
