The senator representing Rivers South-East, Sen. Magnus Abe, has described the killing of some residents of Omoku on the New Year day as barbaric and senseless.

Abe made this remark in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Parry Benson on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.

Unknown gunmen on Jan. 1 killed no fewer than 16 persons, including women and children, who were on their way back from the New Year cross-over church service.

It will be recalled that Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba-Egbema/Ndoni council area, recently started to enjoy relative peace after several months of cult-related violence.

Abe also expressed worry on the re-emergence of violence and crime in the area, saying it was needless for humans to take the lives of others.

“The incident is condemnable and should be condemned by every right thinking human being; Rivers communities should not be allowed to become a haven for blood thirsty hoodlums,’’ he said.

The senator urged the State Government to assist security agencies with the needed tools to enable them tackle the security challenges bedeviling the state.

“The killings in Omoku is an indication that all is not well, the state government should assist security agencies with the needed tools to tackle insecurity.

“The State Government should drastically re-engineer the security architecture of the state, and provide funds to fight crime so as to stop this endless waste of human lives,’’ he said.
