The schedule for today’s inauguration of Nigeria’s 16th democratically elected President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been released.

This momentous occasion will be held at Eagle Square, Abuja, today and will symbolize a significant moment in the democratic journey of Nigeria.

Here is the rundown of the day’s events:

  1. All invited dignitaries are expected to take their seats at Eagle Square.
  2. The President-elect and Vice President-elect will make their grand arrival.
  3. The outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, and Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, will arrive.
  4. The outgoing Vice President will perform his final salute.
  5. The outgoing President will similarly take his last salute.
  6. The outgoing ADC will symbolically hand over the old military colours to the outgoing President.
  7. This will be followed by prayers.
  8. The Chief Justice of Nigeria will then be invited to swear in the new Vice President.
  9. Subsequently, the Chief Justice will swear in the new President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
  10. The immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, will hand over the new colours and instrument of office to the new President.

As the ceremony continues:

  1. The former President will depart for Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, en route to Katsina, using a different vehicle from the one that transported him to the venue.
  2. Muhammadu Buhari will then embark on his journey to Katsina, utilizing the presidential aircraft for the final time.
  3. The new President will then perform his first salute and inspect the Guards of Honour.
  4. The new President will then address the nation for the first time as President and Commander in Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
  5. The President will then journey to the Villa, using the official vehicle that brought Muhammadu Buhari to the venue.
    And after the formalities:

The new President will host visiting Presidents, Heads of State, heads of delegations, Ambassadors, Development Partners, former Ministers, and members of the National Assembly.

In the evening, a state banquet will be held in honour of the new President, and the new President will officially commence work on May 30, 2023.

It is important to note that live transmission of the swearing-in of the President-elect and the Vice President-elect will be broadcast on all national television stations and FRCN. This will allow every Nigerian, home or abroad, to partake in this historic transition of power, marking the start of a new chapter in the annals of Nigerian democracy.
