Retiring Ogun Police Commissioner Regrets Unresolved Killing of State Official
Abiodun Alamutu, the retiring Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, has expressed deep regret over his inability to solve the murder of Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, a finance director attached to the Governor’s Office.
Oyekanmi was ambushed and killed by gunmen on November 29, 2023, while returning from a bank trip in Abeokuta.
The attack occurred as Oyekanmi’s bullion van was ascending the Kuto Bridge in the state capital. The assailants, numbering about five, used sledgehammers to breach the van, shot the director, and fled with a large sum of money. Despite efforts to save him, Oyekanmi was pronounced dead at the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, in response, announced a N50 million reward for information leading to the perpetrators’ arrest. However, the police have yet to make significant progress due to a lack of intelligence and leads.
Alamutu, who retired after 35 years of service, admitted this unresolved case was his single regret as he left office. Speaking to journalists, he emphasized the challenges posed by the lack of actionable information and expressed hope that his successor would continue pursuing justice for Oyekanmi.
Reflecting on his tenure, Alamutu thanked his colleagues, community leaders, and the media for their support. “My only regret is that we haven’t apprehended the person who shot the finance director.
It’s been challenging due to the lack of clues, even though we tracked leads as far as Ibadan. I trust my successor will carry on the effort, and I pray that justice will eventually be served,” he said.
