Real Madrid versus Manchester City: The Case yet to be settled

This season’s Champions League can be argued as the most exciting and the most entertaining it has been within the last 3 seasons. The games played so far, featured a lot of drama, unpredictability and nerves—both for fans, neutrals or the punters.

It has seen clear favorites, PSG dumped out of the tournament by a struggling Real Madrid side that contained a bunch of ageing players against the likes of a Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar jnr forward line.

We saw an Atletico Madrid who were hopeless of a Round of 16 berth, miraculously sending themselves not only into the last 16 but minutes from dragging a billion dollar Manchester City squad into extra time in the quarter final round on the final match day in the group stages.

And let’s not leave behind the tournament’s resident underdogs; the Yellow submarine of Villarreal, who due to being submerged in the ocean, were underrated by Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, just to shock the world and find themselves a spot in the semi final against a Liverpool team no one thought would make it into the final.

Of course, one could be right to think such, considering Villarreal were a 45 minutes from pulling another shock and getting into the final themselves had Liverpool not come into the game. But then, there should be more talks on Real Madrid.

Real Madrid, being a top side and an European giant sitting with 13 Champions League titles; the most of any other club in Europe, oddly enough have been a team that has been looked down as underdogs this season in the competition. They were overlooked at by PSG in the Round of 16, underrated by Chelsea in the Quarter finals, and the rightly enough, their performances in those fixtures somewhat give credence to the idea they were underdogs, but what is most strange is how time and again, they somehow manage to come back.

They come into the game and seemingly qualify for the next stage ahead of their opponents who put in high performances than them.

The first leg of the Semi final against City is another point to look at. The Manchester team from start to finish dominated Real in every way, scored the goals, had the possession but somehow couldn’t finish them off as Madrid kept coming back into the game one way or another, and scoring the needed goals to clear the deficit.

Now with them sitting one goal behind Manchester City, and having the luxury of their home in the very last leg of the knock out stage, we still can’t fathom or comprehend the drama this underdog giant could prove against a high pressing City. They look determined to get somewhere even though they aren’t sure how they want to get there.

But the story remains, the game between Real Madrid and Manchester City in a quest to reach the final in Paris, is far from over, and however City may be flying, Real Madrid seem to come up with the unexplained.
