Reactions to Man United sacking Erik ten Hag

Being a football manager is a tough job, and it is even tougher if you are a Manchester United manager or in this case, Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman who earlier today was announced to have exited his role as Man United boss, stepped on many toes upon taking the job at Old Trafford.

Following his move from Ajax Amsterdam to Manchester in the 2022/23 season, Erik ten Hag made a lot of controversial decisions starting with the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo from Old Trafford to the Saudi Pro League. Ronaldo’s exit also followed in its aftermath, the sad exit of former Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea and also winger, Jadon Sancho.

Jadon Sancho’s case became a lot more controversial after the England international took to the media to counter the manager’s press statement last season, which earned the former Dortmund player some sanctions at the club before his eventual exit from the club.

While Erik ten Hag had his allies at the club prior to his sacking, many were left disgruntled by the Dutchman. A few of them were quick to react as soon as word came out on the manager’s exit from Manchester United.

David de Gea did not hide his excitement on Instagram immediately after the reports even though he was coy enough to hide behind an emoji.

Cristiano Ronaldo however, is not one to hide behind social media antics as earlier this season, the Al-Nassri star disclosed his stance on Erik ten Hag in a scathing criticism of the Dutchman.

The Portuguese icon said a few weeks ago:

“Erik ten Hag says they cannot compete to win the Premier League and the Champions League. As a Manchester United coach, you can NOT say that. You have to fight for them.”

Ronaldo’s Portugal national teammate and former teammate, Bruno Fernandes was a bit sympathetic with the manager in his reaction to Ten Hag’s sack.

The Manchester United no. 8 wrote;

“Thanks for everything, boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best. Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great from all of us, I hope you fans can keep with you the good things Erik has done for our club”
