Reaction trails money bags uncovered in Ali Bongo's home

Following the military coup in Gabon, the military officers behind the overthrow of the country’s political power have continued to defend their actions against the democratic system of power.

The military officers have reportedly uncovered suitcases and bags full of various currencies in the family home of ousted President Ali Bongo of Gabon.

The money bags were reportedly found hours after the military take over in the aftermath of Bongo’s re-election into the power after a 14-year stay in power.

The monies allegedly belonging to the president were found in Yann Ngulu’s house, the Chief of Staff of the eldest son of the deposed President, Nourredine Bongo, who also is under arrest by the military power for treason charge.

In a viral video making the rounds on Twitter, the bags could be seen filled with bundles of CFA francs, dollars, and Euros.

The Bongos have spent approximately 56 years in political power of the Gabonese government which led to the coup that has since enraged the media and the international community.

Here are some of the reactions from social media and amongst Nigerians.

According to a Twitter user identified as @VivienVivicoko, they stated:

“This one is too small compared to what is being stashed away by politicians in Nigeria and the public servants!”

And for another user, @YaoRichard10 they wrote in condemnation of established political bodies of the double standards shown towards the military takeover:

“WHERE ARE these useless groups AU, EU, ECOWAS, and UN? I am sure they must have watched this video by now. How can a leader of the country store such a huge amount of money in his family house while citizens are suffering from hunger?

Twitter user @AOvadje wrote:

“When the people of a nation have nothing else to eat, they will feast on their leaders. This is not a surprise, and it will transcend every African nation. All it requires is time. “May God help us all to curb our greed when we emerge as leaders in positions of power. Amen.”

For Twitter user, @2marts they highlight how the narrative is changing as civilians are being moved to sympathize with the military power due to failings of civilian democratic rule:

“It’s really difficult to support this leader, I am very much against Coup, but when you see something like this, one can’t even say anything.”

Another social media user, @oniakinola4037 wrote:

“Is this money? Come to my country where the Governor, not even the president, leaves a very big room to store money and many other places like septic holes or underground apartments to store money. Be playing.”
