Randy Waldrum reacts to Super Falcons critics

The die was cast when Nigeria’s Super Falcons were placed in what would have been considered the Group of Death at the FIFA’a Women’s World Cup, but like every odd that has ever faced the Falcons’ team, they came out second from Group B to gain a spot in the round of 16.

It only took a goalless draw against Canada in their opening fixture to get the Super Falcons going, and a 3-2 victory over co-hosts, Australia to put pressure on both opponents in the group for a berth in the last 16.

Then a goalless draw versus the Republic of Ireland women sealed the Nigeria women’s fate ahead of the next round of the tournament.

According to the Falcons’ coach, Randy Waldrum, he is happy with what the team achieved despite coming off as the underdog team in the group.

“Two years ago when we started, there were so many things that did not go well. So I told [the players] to keep working and so I am proud of the performances and believe to qualify from this group,” Waldrum said after the match.

“Many people did not give the Super Falcons a chance of going through from the group without losing a match. I am so proud of them.

“I was disappointed because I thought we could win the match, but the fact that we got the objective of qualifying for the knockout stage is enough,” the tactician concluded.

After making it out of Group B alive, the Super Falcons will now play Group D winners in the Round of 16 which could be either England, Denmark or China with all formalities out of the way.

Currently, England sit ahead of the bunch with six points, with Denmark and China having three points each.

The current Women’s World is the Super Falcons‘ ninth appearance in the tournament, having reached the quarter-finals in the 199 edition.

All eyes are now fixated on Group D’s final matches as Super Falcons wait to learn their opponent.
