Protests in Tokyo as Olympics games commence

There were several anti-Olympic protests in the Japanese capital as the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Games started at the national stadium on Friday.

Scores of individuals, surrounded by police, gathered at the city hall with banners saying “Put out the Olympic torch”, “No Olympics”, and one which called the Games a “Global crime against Japan.”

There were also noisy protests outside the stadium where fans were not allowed to attend because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several others also met at the stadium to apparently be close to the opening ceremony without protesting.

Current surveys revealed the majority of Japanese do not want the Games to occur in Tokyo in the midst of the worldwide pandemic.
