Protesters loot in Kano, leaves NCC building in ruins
Protests have resulted in looting of Kano’s recently constructed Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) Industrial Park.
A youth-led nationwide protest against economic hardship kicked off across Nigeria on Thursday. With police shooting teargas canisters at nonviolent protestors, the rallies have also become harsh in Lagos, Borno, Gombe, and Abuja.
The protesters broke into the Kano Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facility, due for commissioning next week, setting it on fire.
Some young people were observed snatching desktop computers, keyboards, chairs, and other goods from the NCC.
Minister of communications and digital economy Bosun Tijani said the development would be a setback.
“Sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park in Kano slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT) has been set ablaze and looted by protesters,” Tijani wrote on X.
“Alongside #3MTT, this building is set to host our buildathon holiday maker programme for secondary school kids starting next week.
“A slight setback for our journey to deepening our workforce for technology while creating job opportunities for the youth. Millions of Naira down the drain.”
Police officials in Kano have responded to efforts by other individuals trying to break into a supermarket shop.
TopNaija gathered that the suspects tried to squeeze their way inside the two-story building housing Sadaraki outlets on Zoo road.
Before the police arrived, the suspects had broken several building windows.
Anas Adamu led a group in Kano on Tuesday claiming that 13 civil society organisations (CSOs) running under the Northern Chapter of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM) coordinate the state-wide demonstration.
During the processions, he advised demonstrators not to bring firearms, abuse individuals or loot property.
