President Tinubu urges youth to cancel planned nationwide protests

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian youths to desist from their planned nationwide protests against the Federal Government’s economic reforms.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at a meeting of the National Council of Traditional Rulers, Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, emphasized the need for patience and commitment to the reforms.

“Capitalizing on the economic hardship in the country, some individuals with sinister motives are reportedly mobilizing citizens, particularly youths, to stage a protest,” Tinubu said.

He stressed that during this critical period of economic adjustment, Nigerians must exhibit patience and dedication to the success of the reforms. Tinubu also urged the nation to learn from past experiences where crises and violence threatened national unity and peace.

“Let’s learn from India and Sudan’s experiences. We are a country with more than 200 million people. We can’t afford such a situation,” he added.

Tinubu highlighted that the current administration has implemented several policies and programs to alleviate the economic challenges facing Nigerians, including the procurement of Compressed Natural Gas vehicles, the introduction of a student loan scheme, distribution of palliatives, and provision of tractors, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs.

He reassured that the Federal Government is making concerted efforts to combat insecurity in the country. “As custodians of our culture, I urge you to carry the message of peace to the young people and parents in your domains,” Tinubu said to the traditional rulers.

In his speech, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’adu Abubakar III, emphasized dialogue as the best means to resolve conflicts. “What dialogue can’t resolve, no amount of violence can resolve. There must be peace,” he stated.

The Ooni of Ife, Dr. Adeyeye Enitan, highlighted patriotism among citizens as crucial for national development.

“Patriotism is synonymous with national cohesion. Any attempt to destroy national cohesion must be resisted,” he said, noting Tinubu’s efforts to stabilize the country despite numerous challenges.

Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Dr. Mainasara Umar-Kogo, acknowledged traditional institutions as the most effective form of local administration since the pre-colonial era.

He argued for the restoration of their roles in the constitution to preserve socio-cultural values.
