President Tinubu orders relief for flood-hit Maiduguri residents
In the wake of Borno State’s most devastating flood in 30 years, which has displaced thousands and submerged 70% of Maiduguri, President Bola Tinubu has directed swift action to protect affected residents.
The flood, triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has led to the deaths of 80% of the animals in the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo and a jailbreak at the Maiduguri correctional facility.
President Tinubu, who is currently abroad, expressed deep concern over the disaster and instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to expedite the evacuation of residents from flooded areas.
NEMA reports that key locations, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, have been severely affected, with many residents waking up to find themselves trapped by the rapidly rising waters.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has visited Maiduguri to assess the damage and oversee relief operations. The Federal Government, in collaboration with state agencies, is working to relocate displaced persons to safer areas, with three Internally Displaced People Camps already established.
The situation is dire, with widespread destruction of homes, businesses, and public institutions, forcing the closure of the University of Maiduguri and several other establishments.
President Tinubu has assured Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum of the Federal Government’s full support, emphasizing the need for immediate and coordinated relief efforts. As NEMA continues to assess the damage, the government is mobilizing resources to address the urgent humanitarian needs of the affected communities.
This disaster, which has also seen the escape of over 200 inmates from a local correctional facility, underscores the severity of the flooding and the need for robust emergency response measures. As Maiduguri battles in the aftermath, the federal government remains committed to providing the necessary assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
