President Buhari Visits Borno After Fire Outbreak

President Mohammadu Buhari has  visited the location after the  devastating fire that destroyed over 13,000 shops and goods worth billions of naira at the Monday Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, last Sunday.

 

He  visited the market to commiserate with the government and people of the state.

 

 

The President was accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council, and some eminent citizens of the state.

 

 

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but eyewitnesses say it started between 2.30am and 3am.

 

During his visit, President Buhari also visited the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-Kanemi, to offer condolences to the indigenes of the state.

 

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, is currently assessing the level of damage caused by the fire and has promised to submit a full report to the President to seek special intervention.

 

 

In the meantime, the Federal Government has released 20,000 bags of rice, 20,000 bags of maize, and condiments as immediate relief materials to the victims of the fire incident. The state government has also provided immediate support of N1bn to the victims.

 

The Monday Market was built in the 1970s and has been a major economic hub in the state, with many people depending on it for their livelihoods. The devastating fire has left many traders and their families in a state of shock and despair, and efforts are being made to provide support and relief to them during this difficult time.
