President Buhari Commends Atiku and Peter Obi for taking to Court
In his farewell address to Nigerians on Sunday morning, President Muhammadu Buhari extended his commendations to the presidential candidates who took their electoral grievances to court following their unsuccessful bids in the last presidential election.
Expressing his admiration for their determination and commitment to democratic processes, President Buhari applauded the opposition parties and their candidates for putting up a valiant fight during the February 25 presidential polls and for demonstrating their faith in the nation’s judiciary.
In his address, the President urged all opposition presidential candidates to graciously accept the outcomes of the court decisions. He emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law and embracing the principles of fairness and justice in the country’s democratic system.
Notably, Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party, have lodged legal challenges against the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the victor of the presidential polls. Their cases are currently being reviewed by the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.
President Buhari’s recognition of the opposition candidates’ pursuit of legal redress highlights the significance of the judiciary in upholding democratic values and providing a platform for peaceful resolution of electoral disputes. The President’s call for acceptance of court decisions further underscores the importance of maintaining national unity and upholding the democratic ideals that Nigeria holds dear.
As the legal process unfolds, Nigerians will keenly await the outcomes of the tribunal’s review, recognizing the crucial role it plays in shaping the nation’s political landscape and affirming the integrity of the electoral process.
President Buhari’s farewell address serves as a reminder of the importance of democratic values, the rule of law, and the collective responsibility to ensure a prosperous and harmonious Nigeria.
