Just when the world thought the premier league season was headed for a boring final match-day weekend, Liverpool pops up to keep the league in the highlights.
The Merseyside reds brought in the narratives after going 2 goals up via a Diogo Jota opener and a Roberto Firmino masterclass within the first 25 minutes of half-time, in what marked the Brazilian’s final goal for Liverpool.
However the Reds surrendered the 2 goal cushion to draw level before the half-time break at the Saint Mary’s.
It was the consistent Liverpool the world has come to know of this season, in a lineup that was readied by Jurgen Klopp to show the world how meaningless the fixture was for the Reds.
Defensive mishaps during play resulted in another calamity on return to the second half, with Southampton going on to score 2 additional goals within minutes to surprisingly put the Saints 4-2 up against Liverpool.
A shocker for an already relegated side creating wonders on final match day of the 2022/23 season it appeared to be, but Liverpool still had more drama to bring to the game to end the season. 2 quick fire goals in the space of 2 minutes by substitute Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota again, brought the tie level before Full Time.
In the other end of the league, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were able to put up an impressive display against an impressive Newcastle United side as the Blues’ themselves came from a goal down to draw level at Full-Time, thanks to goals by Anthony Gordon and an own goal by Kieran Trippier in pushing Raheem Sterling’s weak shot into his goal.
Newcastle United however had little to worry about as they walk out of the season safe at 4th place and promoted to next season’s Champions League campaign.
On the other side of the table, Everton were able to secure promotion following their victory against AFC Bournemouth thanks to an Abdoulaye Doucoure stunner to secure a 1-0 win.
This leaves Leicester City relegated from the premier league to the EFL championship next season despite their 2-1 win against West Ham United.
Fellow relegation strugglers, Leeds United found themselves in a 1-4 defeat, thanks to a Harry Kane 2 minute strike, followed by goals by Pedro Porro, another by Harry Kane and Lucas Moura ending the score line for Tottenham Hotspur.
Jack Harrison however scored Leeds United’s last premier league goal following their relegation from the league.
Other highlights from the premier league season sees Manchester United come from a goal down to Fulham to secure a 2-1 win at Old Trafford with David de Gea needing to save a penalty kick from Fulham’s Aleksandr Mitrovic.
Manchester United’s next door neighbors, City went away to Brentford to secure a 1-0 defeat, making Brentford the only premier league side to complete a double against them this season.
