Popular Singer Ed Sheeran Wins Copyright Trial Of His Music
British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has been found not guilty of copying Marvin Gaye’s 1973 hit “Let’s Get It On” with his own 2014 hit “Thinking Out Loud”.
The trial took place in a United States federal court where Sheeran was originally being sued for $100 million by the heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote “Let’s Get It On” with Gaye.
After a week-long trial, the jury decided that while there were some similarities between the two songs, the elements in question were not unique enough to constitute copyright infringement.
The defense team argued that Sheeran’s song was an original work, and that any similarities were simply common musical elements that are used in many other songs.
Sheeran, who was present in court throughout the trial, expressed his relief at the verdict, stating that he has always been a huge fan of Marvin Gaye and would never intentionally copy his music.
In a statement after the trial, Sheeran thanked his fans and supporters for their encouragement and said he was glad to be able to move on from the legal dispute.
The ruling in Sheeran’s favor is seen as a significant victory for the music industry, as copyright lawsuits have become increasingly common in recent years.
Many artists have faced legal action over alleged copyright infringement, leading to a growing debate over the extent to which musical elements can be considered original works.
