Peter Obi Presents First Witness Against Tinubu In Court

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has presented his first witness in court as part of the ongoing legal challenge against President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 election.

The presentation of the witness took place on Tuesday during the resumed hearing of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

Obi and the LP have embarked on this trial to contest Tinubu’s qualification for the presidency, citing concerns over the double nomination of his Vice, Kashim Shettima, and an alleged drug trafficking conviction in the United States.

During the proceedings, the certified true copy of the US court judgment on drug trafficking and relevant documents obtained from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the double nomination of Shettima were admitted as evidence.

The introduction of the witness and the submission of the aforementioned documents mark an important step in the legal battle as Obi and the LP seek to challenge the legitimacy of Tinubu’s presidency based on these grounds.

The case focuses on Tinubu’s eligibility for office and aims to provide evidence supporting the claims made by Obi and his party.

Commenting on the matter, a member of Obi’s legal team and a chieftain of the party, Kenneth Okonkwo wrote on Twitter: “It was a good day for the Petitioners. @peterobigregory and Datti were in court. Obi and Labour Party commenced their trial today by presenting their first witness.

“The issue was hinged on the non-qualification of Tinubu as a result of double nomination of his Vice, Shettima and the drug trafficking conviction.

“The CTC of the US court judgment on drug trafficking and INEC documents on the double nomination of Shettima were admitted in evidence.  Petition is adjourned to 31st May, 2023.”
