Twitter, a social media platform, has announced that it might discontinue its free blue “verified” checkmarks for notable users.

This move may be attributed to the changes introduced by Elon Musk since he became the company’s leader. Musk had earlier hinted that the “legacy” checkmarks used to confirm users’ identities, including government officials, corporations, journalists, celebrities, and other high-profile tweeters, may be removed.

The company tweeted on Thursday that it would begin phasing out its legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks from April 1. To keep their blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue, a subscription service that Musk relaunched last year. The subscription costs $84 per year or $8 per month.

It is important to note that the blue checkmark indicates that an account has been verified by Twitter as authentic, and it is highly coveted by many users. Twitter Blue is a premium service that offers additional features beyond what is available on the regular platform.
