Paul Merson on the Golden Boot

The English Premier League fresh season is upon us, and with it, the speculations on who wins the league or who would win the golden boot.

For Paul Merson, former Arsenal player and legend, he believes it doesn’t need to be the usual suspects winning the golden boot season in season out.

He believes the notion that there is only one way to win the golden boot is quite wrong as he goes on to name the player he believes can go for the highest goal scorer in the league next season.

Last season, there was the usual suspect of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Cristiano Ronaldo going for the golden boot, although the Portuguese didn’t quite have the productive season he used to be known for prior to coming to Manchester United.

But towards the end of the season, the highest goal scorer in the league went to none other than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and quite surprising for everyone that season was Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung Min as against Harry Kane.

The two players both had 23 goals each with Son scoring less penalty goals than Mohamed Salah but Salah winning the playmaker award.

Following the Community Shield triumph over Manchester City, eyes are being turned over to new comer, Darwin Nunez, while some are inclined to believe it might be Erling Haaland.

Nunez grabbed a late goal against Haaland’s side in the game, but despite his performance or Haaland’s reputation as a goal poacher, Paul Merson doesn’t favor any of them.

Instead, the Arsenal legend tips Harry Kane for it, believing the presence of star attackers like Gabriel Jesus, Haaland, Nunez won’t stop the English international from doing his job.

Merson wrote:

“You win the Golden Boot by scoring against the bottom-half teams, not by scoring 15 goals against the top-four sides,” explaining why there were many ways to win the golden boot and why it would be Harry Kane.
