Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has revealed that she will not compete in the 100m race at the ongoing Paris Olympics, citing administrative blunders by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC). In a candid post, Ofili wrote,
“It is with great regret that I have just been told I will not be competing in the 100 metres at this Olympic Games. I qualified, but those with the AFN and NOC failed to enter me. I have worked for four years to earn this opportunity. For what?”
She further criticized the lack of accountability and questioned the trustworthiness of these institutions.
This isn’t the first time Ofili has faced such a setback; she reminded her followers of a similar incident at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where 14 Nigerian athletes, including herself, were disqualified due to the AFN and NOC’s failure to release funds for necessary doping tests.
Favour Ofili expressed hope that she would still be able to compete in the 200m event, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
