Paris Olympics: Heartbreak in Paris for the Matildas
Sometimes, being good is not enough to actually be the best team and the Paris Olympics has shown a way of proving that right as Australia Women national team; the Matildas crash out of the tournament.
The Matildas’ Olympic journey ended in heartbreak as a 2-1 defeat to Team USA dashed their hopes of advancing in the 2024 Paris Games. Needing at least a draw to progress, Australia’s fate was sealed by a stunning top-corner strike from Korbin Albert late in the second half. The loss, coupled with Brazil’s 2-0 defeat to Spain, confirmed the Matildas’ early exit.

Speaking to Channel Nine, a visibly emotional Clare Wheeler expressed the team’s disappointment: “You can tell we’re all devastated. It’s going to be one of those games we wish we could have again … we can only hope. We’re sorry we couldn’t get the job done today.”
With their Olympic campaign cut short, the Matildas will now return home to regroup and reflect on what might have been.
In a daring act in the second group stage wrestle against Zambia, the Australian Women fought for an epic comeback in a 6-5 thriller in the Paris affair to inspire hope in the Olympics tournament. However, the United States of America had other ideas for the Matildas, and that involved sending them back home to the ends of the far continent.
