Paris 2024 Olympics: Nigeria’s D’Tigress make history with quarterfinals qualification

In a game that showcased their remarkable progress, Coach Rena Wakama’s squad put up a valiant effort on Wednesday night, ultimately falling to the world number one USA with a final score of 74-88. Despite the loss, Dโ€™Tigress made history by becoming the first African team to reach the Olympic quarterfinals, having secured impressive victories over Australia and Canada in the preliminary rounds.

Ranked as Africa’s top team and 12th globally, Nigeria entered the Olympics with high hopes of causing an upset. While the experienced American team proved too formidable, D’Tigress shone brightly in the final quarter, outscoring their opponents by 12 points and demonstrating their potential on the world stage.

In parallels, their performance at the Paris Olympics mirrors their football counterpart; the Nigeria Super Falcons’ performance at the Women’s World Cup in 2022 where the Nigerian women were eliminated at the round of 16 stage versus England due to a rather tight penalty margin despite having an impressive group stage outing.
