Panic as another fuel tanker explodes in Jigawa

A fuel tanker explosion at the Jigawa-Kano border on Tuesday, November 12, sparked panic as fire erupted along Maiduri Road, according to the Federal Fire Service (FFS) Jigawa Command.

Aliyu M. A., the FFS’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, revealing swift action by emergency responders.

“At approximately 10:43 hours on November 12, 2024, we received a distress call from Kuho Village Head, Zubairu Ahmad, reporting a tanker accident at Tsaida, Kwanar Kalle, near Gamoji village,” Aliyu stated.

He added, “The FFS responded promptly, arriving at the scene by 10:50 hours. The fire was contained and brought under control.”

The incident follows a deadly tanker explosion in October that claimed over 170 lives in Majia, Taura Local Government Area. In that instance, a petrol-laden truck travelling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State exploded, causing widespread casualties.

Though no casualties were reported in the latest fire, the recurrence of such incidents has raised public concerns over fuel transportation safety in Jigawa.
