P-CNGi begins distribution of 500 CNG kits to commercial motorists in Ogun

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) launched a major milestone in Ogun State on Saturday, distributing and installing 500 compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinders and kits for commercial motorists.

Three conversion centers in the state, including the Ogun Public Works Agency’s Agbeloba Centre in Abeokuta, participated in the distribution.

Director of Vehicle Inspection Services for Ogun’s Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olugboyegba Ademehin, explained that the initial focus is on inspecting vehicles for CNG conversion readiness. Certified vehicles will receive conversion kits, with 60 cylinders—10 units of 75 liters and 50 units of 65 liters—distributed at the Agbeloba Centre. The 75-liter cylinders can fuel vehicles for up to 150 kilometers.

Ademehin emphasized the safety of the CNG cylinders, which are molded with a 60-millimeter thickness and certified by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON). He also mentioned two CNG filling stations already operational in Abeokuta, highlighting the state’s early adoption of CNG technology for a cleaner environment.

“We have already begun CNG bus conversions in Ogun before this initiative. With the rising cost of petrol, CNG offers a cheaper, cost-effective solution for transport,” said Ademehin.

Mr. Ali Manager, Operations Manager at Nigerian Gas and Transport Solutions Ltd., stated that the initiative would help Nigeria tap into its underutilized natural gas resources. He added that CNG could significantly reduce transportation costs for Nigerians.

National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW) Ogun Chairman, Alhaji Ismail Adewale, lauded the initiative, expressing hope that the widespread adoption of CNG would ease the financial burden of transport, especially in light of the recent hikes in petrol and diesel prices.
