Over a thousand people dead as devastating earthquake hits Morocco (video)
A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 has hit central Morocco, causing a tragic death toll of at least 1,037 and numerous injuries.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the High Atlas Mountains, 71 kilometers (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, with a depth of 18.5 kilometers, as reported by the US Geological Survey.
This seismic event took place at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT) on Friday, September 8, and was followed by a 4.9 magnitude aftershock just 19 minutes later, according to BBC news.
The quake caused strong vibrations in the coastal towns of Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira.
Morocco’s interior ministry confirmed casualties in Marrakesh and nearby areas, notably in isolated places, in a statement.
The earthquake killed people in many provinces and towns, including al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant, and wounded over 1,200 others.
There have been reports of families who are trapped beneath the rubble of their homes in the city. The Medina has also suffered structural damage due to the earthquake.
This is the strongest quake that the country has ever experienced. One expert even referred to it as the region’s largest in over 120 years.
