Oshoala becomes Falcons’ assistant captain
Super Falcons forward player Asisat Oshoala has received extra motivation heading into the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France after being named the official assistant captain of the team on Thursday.
France-based striker Desire Oparanozie was earlier announced as captain of the nine-time African champions, as the Falcons strategise ahead of the World Cup.
The three-time Africa Women’s Player of the Year, who joined the Falcons in 2011, has risen through the ranks to become a key player for the national side.
And with coach Thomas Dennerby strategically easing out the old guards, Oshoala is seen as one of the players to lead a new generation of Falcons players.
The fast-paced forward, who recently sealed a permanent move to FC Barcelona Ladies after a loan spell from Chinese Super League side Dalian Quanjian FC, was on Thursday appointed team assistant captain, a statement from the Nigeria Football Federation said.
The top scorer and Most Valuable Player of the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2014 has extra motivation to take the finals in France by storm, as she is in incredible form heading into the World Cup after scoring a brace in each of the Falcons’ last two friendlies in Hungary and Slovenia.
