Oscar winning poducer Jon Landau is Dead
Jon Landau (63), the film producer who won an Oscar for “Titanic” and who also produced “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is dead.
Landau passed away in Los Angeles on Friday July 5, according to his obituary.
Confirming Landau’s death. his sister Tina took to social media, calling him “the best brother a girl could ever dream of”.
“My heart is broken but also bursting with pride & gratitude for his most extraordinary life, and the love and gifts he gave me – and all who knew him or his films,” she wrote.
Further speaking, Alan Bergman, Disney Entertainment co-chairman, in a statement on Saturday said, “Jon was a visionary whose extraordinary talent and passion brought some of the most unforgettable stories to life on the big screen. His remarkable contributions to the film industry have left an indelible mark, and he will be profoundly missed. He was an iconic and successful producer, yet an even better person—a true force of nature who inspired all around him,”
Landau began his career in the 1980s as a production manager, steadily ascending to a producer role on James Cameron’s monumental film, “Titanic,” which became the first movie to surpass $1 billion in global box office earnings and won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture.
“I can’t act and I can’t compose and I can’t do visual effects. I guess that’s why I’m producing,” Landau humorously remarked while accepting the award with Cameron.
His partnership with Cameron continued with the groundbreaking “Avatar,” a sci-fi epic that broke box office records and remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Landau played a crucial role in the “Avatar” franchise, overseeing its development and defending its ambitious sequels.
Jon Landau is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Julie, and their sons, Jamie and Jodie
