Oscar-winner and Harry Potter alum Maggie Smith is dead

A sad one for fans of the Harry Potter film franchise and the entertainment world as it loses another of Harry Potter alum Maggie Smith a year after the passing of Michael Gambon.

The death of Dame Maggie Smith coincides the same day, albeit a year after her co-star Michael Gambon died in 2023, September 27th.

The British actress prior to her death is known for her award-winning roles in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Downton Abbey, and Harry Potter.

Dame Maggie Smith passed away aged 89, and is survived by her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, who both confirmed her passing in a heartfelt statement on Friday, September 27th.

The Oscar-winner is confirmed to have passed on in a hospital according to the statement.

Rising to fame in her early years with impeccable performances on stage and screen, Dame Maggie Smith cemented her legacy with two Oscars, countless awards, and iconic characters that transcended generations.

From her witty and sharp portrayal of the Dowager Countess of Grantham to her endearing role as Professor Minerva McGonagall, Smith brought a timeless charm to every role she touched, leaving behind an irreplaceable mark on cinema history.
