Opeyemi Gbenga Kayode, known by his stage name Pepenazi, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter.

 

EARLY LIFE
Opeyemi Gbenga Kayode known popularly as Pepenazi was born on 16th April 1988 in Lagos, Nigeria. He is from Odigbo in Ondo state. While in the University, Pepenazi contested and won the Student Union Government Election (SUG) as the Director of Socials and he alongside other performing acts in the institution made a musical album titled “Futa’s Finest”.

 

EDUCATION
Opeyemi Gbenga Kayode attended Kameesther Nursery and Primary school, Aguda Surulere, Lagos where he earned his First School Leaving Certificate, Mayflower School, Kenne, Ogun state for his Secondary education and then going on to the Federal University of technology, Akure, Ondo state for a degree in Estate management.

 

CAREER
Pepenazi is a songwriter, recording artist, and performer whose debut into the Nigerian Music scene was with the single, ‘Arose’ in 2012 which was produced by Bam Tunes with its video featuring Cameo appearances by Nigerian Popular rap acts, M.I, Vector and W4.

Pepenazi who was inspired by rap acts like Wyclef, notorious B.I.G, P Daddy, Fat Joe, among others recorded his first single as an Undergraduate student eventually getting signed to Eclectic Entertainment under which he released his debut single. He took a break from the music scene to focus on his Academics and then serving his country and while serving, contested and won the 2013 Airtel NYSC Lagos Camp Freestyle Competition. He returned to the music scene with the singles, “Born You” and “Low” in October 2014. The video for “Low” featured a lot of big acts in the music industry, people like; Iyanya, Sound Sultan, Lil Kesh, Samklef, DJ Spinall and Viktoh among others. He released “Illegal” featuring Olamide and produced by Young John and this was quite the rave.

In February 2015, he released a hardcore rap single titled “Adam” featuring Olamide and in May 2015, he released an alternative single titled “Fifemayo” in which he described the Joys of Parenthood and which was produced by Tmode beatz. He was rumoured to be signed to Olamide’s YBNL label due to the incessant featuring of Olamide in almost all his songs but he quelled this rumour by saying he was only affiliated with the brand. He wrote the intro to Olamide’s Baddest Guy Ever Liveth, featuring in it.

In 2016, he dropped a new single, “One for the road” which was produced by Pheelz and then “Iwo Na (Your wishes)” featuring then YBNL Nation act, Lil Kesh. On 15 May 2017, Pepenazi released the Audio to his record, titled, “Ase”, which featured Tiwa Savage and ace Music producer, Masterkraft and on 2nd August, 2017, Pepenazi dropped another AfroDanceHall single titled, “Jabo”.

He was nominated for the Rookie of the year Awards at the 2015 Headies and has performed at events including his stellar performance at the Ibadan edition of Star Trek in August 2015, Season 2 of the Olamide Live in Concert (OLIC 2), One Lagos concert in December, 2015, Harem and Moloko South African clubs in 2017. He has worked with the likes of Damiano, Sarz, Samclef, Ogajojo, Tmode, Synx.

PERSONAL LIFE
He got his stage name “Pepenazi” from his school days when he was called Pepe because he was quite garrulous. He remixed the name to Pepenazi which he says stands for ‘People Enjoy Nice and Zealous Instinct’.
