Olympics: Nigeria vs. Spain: “Why we can do it” — Randy Waldrum
After falling to Brazil in the first game of the Olympics tournament, Nigeria faces a tough task facing Spain in the second game of the group stages.
With the Super Falcons gearing up for their high-stakes clash with the world champions, head coach Randy Waldrum has issued a powerful rallying cry: it’s time to find the back of the net.
Following a heart-wrenching 1-0 loss to Brazil, where Nigeria’s former African champions missed three golden opportunities in the first 25 minutes, Waldrum is challenging his players to don their scoring boots and rise to the occasion.

Reflecting on the Brazil game, Waldrum emphasized the importance of being clinical. “Our ability to be more clinical with our chances is going to be vital. We have to do a better job [of that] because you’re not going to get 10-12 shots on these teams,” Waldrum shared with ESPN.
“You’re going to get two or three chances, decent chances probably in the day, and you’ve got to be good enough to put one in and make sure defensively to keep them from putting goals.”
Midfielder Toni Payne echoed Waldrum’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to compete with the best.
“We can compete with anyone. One of the things we work on most with Randy Waldrum is tactics, being organized, getting used to playing together, unifying everyone’s style,” Payne told Spanish sports daily AS about the game between Nigeria and Spain.
