State Police: Oluwo warns federal government

Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo land, has warned Nigeria’s federal government against the development of state police.

Oba Akanbi voiced fear that autocratic governors will misuse the system and undermine existing cooperation among state institutions.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Alli Ibraheem on Monday, Oluwo cautioned that state policing might lead to civil disturbance if state actors reject federal authority.

He advised President Bola Tinubu not to approve a plan that could jeopardize the federal government’s sole legislative authority over security.

Instead, the monarch proposed hiring more police officers and boosting the welfare of Nigerian police officers.

“Policing is on the exclusive legislative list of the federal government. Creating a state police will destabilize the existing tranquility and cooperation existing between and among the Nigerian states’ authorities.

“Most state authorities are known for flouting the order of the federal government. Exclusive affairs will be abused by governors with autocratic tendencies. Nigeria is not ripe for state policing.

“I implore the federal government to recruit more police personnel and improve their welfare package. This, if done, will fortify the Nigerian Police Force and bring sanity to policing,” he insisted.

Topnaija recalled that the Oluwo of Iwo advised the youths that money rituals do not exist rather, they should work hard to earn a legitimate living.
