Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti, who is called by the name Seun Kuti, is a Nigerian musician, singer and the youngest son of the famous Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.


EARLY LIFE
Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti was born on 11th of January 1983, to the musical legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

 

EDUCATION
Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti studied at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. At 19, the singer put Egypt 80 on hold and went to England, like his father, to study popular music and sound technology.

 

CAREER
Seun Kuti joined his father’s band, “Egypt 80” at a very young age, he began to show his amazing talent not just for singing but also playing the Saxophone. When his father, Fela died in 1997, Seun Kuti who was only 14 at the time, took over the leadership of the band since his elder brother, Femi Kuti had refused the role. He led the band to a number of tours worldwide.

In 2008, Seun released his debut album titled ‘Many Things’ which was hailed as one of the most exciting releases in world music in years, sharing the stage with with Diana Ross at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in thesame year. In 2010, he featured in Calle 13’s song “Todo se mueve” (Everything Moves) on their Entren los que quieran album.

On March 2, 2018 his album ‘Black Times’ was released and surged up to 8th on the Billboard World Music Chart following after his father whoose ‘Live in Detroit’ album made it to No. 9 on the same chart in 1986.

He is signed under the record label The Knitting factory and still works with some of the producers who worked on his father’s music.

Following in his father’s footsteps as a political activist, Seun was active in the January 2012 Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of fuel subsidy. Seun is an advocate for the legalisation of weed.


FAMILY
Seun and his wife, Yetunde George Ademiluyi welcomed a baby girl on December 16,  2013 and named her Ifafunmike Adara Anikulapo-Kuti. In 2020, the two became an internet sensation when they celebrated fifteen years of friendship.

 

PERSONAL LIFE
Seun Kuti who was born in 1983 became interested in music at the age of five, by the time he turned nine, he had started playing with his father’s band, Egypt 80.

His father “Fela Kuti” died in 1997 and Seun Kuti took to the role of leading Egypt 80.

In November 2020, he led the revival of his father’s defunct political party – Movement of The People with the intention of registering it with Nigeria’s electoral body, INEC.

ACHIEVEMENT
In 2018, Black Times, by Seun Kuti was nominated for the Grammys, in the World Music Category. This makes him the second child of the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti to be considered for this award, as his elder brother “Femi Kuti” has been previously nominated in the same category without a win.
