Ogun State allocates 100 hectares for Naval base, dockyard

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on Friday presented official documents allocating 100 hectares of land to the Nigerian Navy for the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard in the state.

The documents were handed over to the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, during a courtesy visit to the Naval Headquarters in Abuja.

Governor Abiodun stated that the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen collaboration between the Ogun State government and the Nigerian Navy, especially as the state approaches oil production status.

He highlighted that Ogun had recently been granted frontier status by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), indicating that oil exploration would soon commence.

“Ogun State has now qualified for frontier status, with exploration activities set to begin soon. With this development, the establishment of a Naval Base and Dockyard is essential to protect the state’s facilities,” Governor Abiodun said.

The governor also noted that the state has significant deposits of bitumen and other resources, further justifying the need for a naval presence.

He mentioned that a team had already been sent to identify suitable sites for the base and dockyard, particularly given the importance of the Natural Gas Project (LNG) and the strategic location of Ogun State.

In response, Vice Adm. Ogalla expressed the Navy’s commitment to establishing the Naval Base and Dockyard in Ogun to safeguard critical investments. He emphasized Ogun’s strategic importance as an industrial hub and assured that the Navy would expedite the necessary preparations to bring the project to life.

Vice Adm. Ogalla also urged the governor to provide the Certificate of Occupancy to facilitate the swift commencement of the project, reiterating the Navy’s role in ensuring the security of key economic investments in the state.
