Ogun government vows to expedite inmate trials for correctional center decongestion
Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ogun, has announced plans to accelerate the trial of inmates in courts to alleviate congestion in Correctional Centers across the state.
This commitment was emphasized during Ogungbade’s visit to Ibara and Oba Correctional Centers in Abeokuta.
The attorney general underscored the administration’s dedication to addressing longstanding issues in correctional centres, highlighting initiatives to streamline legal processes and expedite prisoner appearances in court for hearings.
Efforts to improve services at correctional centres were intensified, with Ogungbade emphasizing the need for synergy between the ministry and correctional centre authorities to uphold inmates’ rights and dignity while ensuring public safety.
“Various initiatives are in the pipeline to streamline legal processes and expedite the appearance of prisoners in courts for hearing.
“The ministry is working out strategies and efforts in facilitating the smooth transfer of prisoners to court when needed.
“This approach will allow us to understand the multifaceted issues affecting the correctional system and formulate targeted strategies for improvement,” he said.
The visit aimed to assess facilities, understand underlying issues, and serve as a beacon of hope for both centre staff and inmates. Ogungbade emphasized the government’s commitment to championing reforms promoting fairness, efficiency, and rehabilitation within the criminal justice system.
Accompanied by key officials including the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Legal Matters, Toyese Owoade, and the Director of Public Prosecution, Adejumoke Adewole, Ogungbade’s visit received appreciation from Saliu Adepoju, Controller of Correctional Center in the state, who pledged increased dedication to upholding center ethics.
