NYSC releases statement on killed corps member in Nasarawa

Chapter of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nasarawa State has expressed sadness over the death of one corps member, Samuel Makene, in the state.

The scheme also urged other corps members to be apolitical to prevent being engulfed in the dangers associated with the politics of 2019 general elections.

Mr Jacob Unogwu, Acting Head, Press and Public Relation Unit of NYSC in Nasarawa state revealed this in a statement he signed and made available to journalists on Monday in Lafia the state capital.

According to the statement, the NYSC state coordinator, Mrs Zainab Isah got a text message from the DSS about the death of a corps member, Samuel Makene and contacted NYSC Zonal Inspector, Akwanga who confirmed the incident.

On getting this message, the Zonal Inspector, Akwanga was contacted and she said she was just informed by one of her staff on the incident.

The statement said: “The State coordinator, Mrs. Zainab Isah, management and the entire corps members have been thrown into mourning as a result of this unfortunate incidence.

“The state coordinator want to use this opportunity to once more warn corps members to avoid all forms of political gatherings and association through the period of their service and remain completely apolitical. She warned that corps members who go contrary to this instruction will be sanctioned according to the NYSC Bye Laws.”

The statement added that despite the festive mood the world is, NYSC Nasarawa is mourning and prays that God grants the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

“We are very unhappy with what happened. Nobody is happy. Even the corp members are not happy. Their patriotic service to their fatherland is the only thing we want our corp member to focus on.

“Again, we want to use this opportunity to commiserate with the family of the deceased over this irreparable loss and we pray God gives them the strength and fortitude to move on,” said the statement.

Makene, was a 2018 Batch A corp member whose place of primary assignment is Government Secondary School Ubbe, Akun Development area was stabbed to death on Thursday by some youths at the Akwanga residence of Hon. David Ombugadu, representing Akwanga/Nasarawa-Eggon/Wamba constituency at the House of Representatives.
