Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Lagos State have denied receiving a ₦100,000 state allowance from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in July.

This clarification follows multiple social media posts falsely claiming the governor paid a significant state allowance to corps members.

Despite these widespread online assertions, the state allowance remains ₦15,000, and not all corps members are eligible for it. Olayide Soaga, a corps member working as a newspaper intern, clarified that the ₦100,000 was a one-time gift to the Lagos NYSC Batch B1 corps members.

“No, it was giveaway funds. That occasion was just a one-time thing,” Soaga explained. “Lagos corps members do not receive state allowance. The money was only for Lagos NYSC Batch B1 corps members who were in camp at the time.”

Timilehin Akinmoyeje, another corps member in Lagos, confirmed that only those working directly with the state government receive the ₦15,000 monthly allowance, in addition to the standard NYSC ₦33,000 stipend.

“Corps members that work for Lagos State Government receive ₦15,000 monthly,” Akinmoyeje said. “This is in addition to the NYSC ₦33,000 allowance every corps member receives. That ₦100,000 was just a giveaway on a whim. It’s not the usual. Not the standard.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his announcement on July 26, stated that the ₦100,000 was a token of appreciation.

This comes as President Bola Tinubu and labor union leaders recently agreed to set the new minimum wage at ₦70,000. However, despite Tinubu’s approval, state governors have yet to announce their implementation of this new minimum wage.
