"No investment in security, Armed Forces of Nigeria" — Senate

The Senate Committee on Defence has asserted that no investment in security and the Armed Forces of Nigeria is too great for the country to bear.

This statement came from the committee’s Chairman, Senator Ahmad Lawan, during a press conference following an oversight visit to the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) in Jaji, Kaduna, on Monday.

Senator Lawan emphasized the critical nature of security in contemporary society, vowing to ensure that both national security and the armed forces receive the attention they deserve. He remarked, “When we can secure our environment, then we can provide other things easily and comfortably.”

During his visit, Lawan highlighted the significance of the AFCSC as a premier institution for military training and education, serving both the tactical and operational needs of officers engaged in various military operations. He underscored the necessity for a conducive training environment to achieve the institution’s goals effectively.

“There has to be significant funding for the AFCSC and other defense institutions, such as the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the National Defence College,” he stated, acknowledging the global recognition of the AFCSC as a center of excellence for military training.

Lawan urged that the National Assembly prioritize increased funding for these institutions in the 2025 appropriations to ensure they can continue to provide essential services to the nation. “This should be what is most important for us as a country today,” he asserted.

The committee chairman concluded by congratulating the AFCSC Commandant and previous leadership for their dedication to the institution’s development since its inception.
