Nnamdi Kanu seeks negotiation with FG over trial
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), announced his intention to seek negotiation with the Federal Government regarding his ongoing trial.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, conveyed this to the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, citing Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act.
The Act allows the court to promote reconciliation and encourage amicable settlements in any proceeding.
Ejimakor moved two applications before the court: one to move form 49 and another challenging the court’s jurisdiction. If these applications are denied, Kanu plans to push for the implementation of Section 17.
In response, the counsel for the federal government, Adegboyega Awomolo, stated that he had informed the defense that he does not have the authority to negotiate on behalf of the Federal Government.
He advised that Kanu should approach the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who has the power to negotiate.
Presiding Judge Binta Nyako emphasized that the court’s role is to hear cases, not to act as a solicitor.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following his arrest in Kenya. He faces terrorism-related charges brought by the government.
