NLC Suspends Impending Strike

The Nigerian Labour unions comprised of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union of Nigeria (TUC) has suspended its planned strike action roughly 24 hours after embarking on a nationwide protest over the removal of subsidy on petroleum.

The report was announced during an interview hosted on Arise News on Thursday morning with the President of Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo.

Osifo explained that Labour leaders who had met with the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu were able to elicit some commitments to some of the issues raised during the meeting for immediate implementation to tackle the needs of Nigerian workers.

“The protest has been called off because the government has promised that within the next week, a lot of things will be put in place.” Festus Osifo asserts.

On the meeting with President Tinubu at Aso Rock, Osifo goes on to explain;

“The committee that was proposed on the 19th of June had not made sufficient traction, and most of the input the Nigeria Labour Congress wanted has not come to pass.”

He further revealed that the NLC had given an 8-week mandate from June 19th to August 19th, with which the entire issue would be dispensed with.

The Organised Labour on Wednesday had protested to embark on striking actions in response to their agitations over the removal of fuel subsidy and the rising cost and inflation of priced commodities in the Nigerian market.
