NITDA warns Facebook users over new malware attack

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning about a new malware threat called ‘Ov3r Stealer’ that targets Facebook users in Nigeria.

The malware works by tempting users with fake employment advertisements, which lead them to click on harmful links. Once clicked, the malware has access to sensitive user data such as geolocation, passwords, credit card information, and more.

According to NITDA, Ov3r Stealer can also act as a delivery method for other malware, such as ransomware, posing major hazards to users’ personal and financial data.

To protect against such dangers, NITDA urges Nigerians to keep their apps up-to-date, be cautious when clicking on advertisement links, and ensure that antivirus software is updated regularly.

As hackers increasingly target social media platforms for assaults, users must be aware and knowledgeable about evolving cybersecurity dangers to protect themselves from harm.

This warning comes in light of recent cases of malware, such as Redline Stealer, spreading via hijacked Facebook pages, emphasising the necessity of practising cybersecurity hygiene when using social media sites.
