NIN-SIM linkage: NCC, NIMC collaborate to ease process
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have unveiled a pivotal collaboration aimed at refining procedures related to the National Identification Number (NIN)-SIM linkage.
This partnership was announced in a joint statement signed by Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, and Ayodele Babalola, Technical Adviser for Media and Communications to the DG/CEO of NIMC, aims to streamline the NIN-SIM linkage process by leveraging synergies and expertise across both entities.
Central to their collaboration is the harmonisation of regulations to remove obstacles hindering the NIN-SIM linkage exercise. Key areas of collaboration outlined include:
– Ensuring a seamless experience for telecom subscribers by expediting NIN verification during SIM registration and activation processes.
– Conducting educational campaigns and training sessions to boost public awareness and compliance with NIN-SIM linkage requirements.
– Offering support for NCC in verifying NINs associated with SIM registrations and ensuring data accuracy through NIMC’s robust database.
– Aligning policies and regulatory frameworks to integrate NIN-SIM linkage processes within the telecommunications sector.
Both agencies are committed to fostering an open, cooperative relationship that prioritises the welfare of Nigerians and the nation’s progress. With the NIN-SIM linkage exercise gaining national prominence, timely action is imperative to match SIM registrations with unique national identification numbers.
Recent directives from the NCC necessitate full network barring on phone lines lacking NIN submissions by February 28, 2024. Subscribers providing NINs without validation will also face restrictions. Additionally, lines associated with unverified NINs are slated for network barring by March 29, 2024, or April 15, 2024, depending on the number of associated lines.
The collaboration between NCC and NIMC signifies a concerted effort to surmount challenges related to NIN-SIM linkage, ensuring its smooth execution and reinforcing Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.
