Nigerian Navy seizes three barges in Bayelsa, arrests seven for oil theft
In a proactive move to curb oil theft in Bayelsa, the Nigerian Navy intercepted three barges suspected of transporting stolen crude oil and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The operation, conducted at Tunu Community Creek in Ekeremor Local Government Area, resulted in the arrest of seven individuals allegedly involved in the illegal activity.
Commander Nanmar Lakan, leading the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, revealed that the operation stemmed from intelligence reports highlighting illicit activities in the area. Upon investigation, the seven suspects claimed affiliation with Tunu leadership but were detained pending further inquiry.
The crackdown comes in response to complaints from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) regarding significant losses due to oil theft, amounting to 25 percent of their daily production. Acting swiftly, the Navy launched air and water surveillance, leading to the interception of the barges.
The seized vessels, equipped with substantial capacities, raised concerns about the magnitude of the operation. Two barges could carry up to 637,000 litres each, while the third had a capacity of 700,000 litres. Investigations are underway to determine the owners of the barges and the intended destination of the stolen products.
Commander Lakan reiterated the Navy’s unwavering commitment to combatting oil theft, warning perpetrators to cease their illegal activities. The interception underscores the Navy’s determination to uphold maritime security and protect vital resources in the region.
