Nigeria vs. South Africa: "The boys know what is at stake" -- Ikpeba

There is a battle on the ground as Nigeria hosts South Africa in their World Cup qualifying group.

Former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba ahead of the fixture, has underscored the significance of the upcoming World Cup battle between Nigeria and South Africa. Both teams, part of Group C in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, are set to clash on June 7 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The match is crucial for both sides, who have had inconsistent starts to their qualification campaigns. Nigeria and South Africa both dropped points in their recent matches, making this encounter pivotal for their World Cup aspirations.

Describing the magnitude of the match, ex-Super Eagles striker while speaking to Naija News said;

“The game against South Africa is the game of our lives.”

He expressed confidence in the team under coach Finidi George, highlighting their recent performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) where they reached the final in a highly competitive tournament.

“The boys know what is at stake,” Ikpeba continued. “They have to be focused and make the necessary sacrifices to ensure they beat South Africa. It won’t be easy, but it can be done.”

Both teams have had shaky starts in their Group C campaign. South Africa currently sits second in the table, having started with a home victory over Benin but then suffering an away loss to Rwanda. Nigeria, meanwhile, was held to a 1-1 draw by Lesotho at home and then drew 1-1 again with Zimbabwe.

As they head into the June fixture, both sides may recall their quarter-final meeting at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria triumphed on penalties. Additionally, the upcoming match will bring back memories of June 2017 when South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-0 in a 2018 World Cup qualifier at the same venue in Uyo.

With both teams keen to secure a win, the stage is set for a thrilling and high-stakes encounter in Uyo.
