Nigeria vs. Ivory Coast: Twitter cooks Nigerians over AFCON finale
Ghanaians will be tempted to say ‘Nigerians didn’t Cedis coming’, and surely no one saw the crunching AFCON defeat coming for the Super Eagles.
Finals can be tough, however losing one is by far tougher, and right now, no one wants to be ‘Nigeria‘ on social media, especially on Twitter following the defeat to Ivory Coast in the AFCON final.
Nigerian fans ever since the AFCON tournament, held a notoriety in banter against its neighboring countries, Ghana and Cameroon, and just after falling to the Ivorians, the Twitter receipts and reactions came on the hot heels for Nigerians.
It was a shocking 2-1 defeat for the Super Eagles who came into the match looking as favorites to clinch a 4th AFCON title in front of a fully stacked stadium of Ivorians.
However, football had its own narratives; ones that didn’t suit Nigeria against the host nation, who gained qualification into the knock out stages via a best loser category and few results going their favor in the lead up to the final.
The Twitter reactions following the defeat were harsh for the Super Eagles fans but same time funny on Nigerians who held the waves on social media leading up to the final.
A quiet front it would be for fans from here on out as the Nigeria national team will return to face the realities on ground while seeking their next line of action.
Here are some of the social media receipts and reactions;
