Nigeria unveils zero draft for new national electricity policy
The Nigerian government has taken a significant step towards overhauling the country’s troubled electricity sector with the release of the zero draft of the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan (NIEP-SIP).
The newly unveiled policy draft is designed to address the long-standing challenges that have plagued the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, focusing on creating a more reliable and sustainable power sector.
It offers a strategic approach that spans the entire electricity value chain — from generation and transmission to distribution and off-grid solutions.

At the presentation of the zero draft in Abuja, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, underscored the importance of this policy framework, calling it a “cornerstone in Nigeria’s journey toward building a resilient and inclusive power sector.”
Adelabu emphasized that the policy is not just a response to the current power crisis but also a forward-looking strategy that anticipates the future needs of Nigeria’s growing population and economy.
“This zero draft is the result of intensive consultations with industry experts and stakeholders, demonstrating our commitment to finding a lasting solution to the nation’s power challenges,” he stated.
The zero draft also aims to enhance private sector participation, foster innovation, and improve regulatory frameworks. By targeting these areas, the government hopes to create a more competitive environment that attracts investment and improves electricity supply to all Nigerians.
