Nigeria set to showcase artists at Venice Biennale 2024

Nigeria’s Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has confirmed Nigeria’s participation in the upcoming Venice Biennale from April 16 to April 18 in Italy.

The Biennale, organized by the Museum of West Africa Art (MOWAA), is a renowned international cultural exhibition.

The Nigerian pavilion is all set to provide a platform for Nigerian artists to exhibit their works on the global stage. This opportunity aims to showcase their talent to a wider audience and strengthen cultural ties with other nations.

The theme for the exhibition, ‘Foreigners Everywhere,’ will spark conversations around contemporary art. Nigeria’s pavilion, located at the historic Palazzo Salviati in Dorsoduro, near the Gallerie dell’Accademia, will feature works by eight Nigerian artists, including Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, Ndidi Dike, Onyeka Igwe, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Abraham Oghobase, Yinka Shonibare, Fatimah Tuggar, and Precious Okoyomon.

The Nigerian artists’ participation underscores the country’s commitment to promoting its cultural heritage. Musawa highlighted the breakout success of Precious Okoyomon at the 2022 edition.

The Nigerian pavilion aims to foster collaborations within the global art community. Africa will be well-represented, with ten countries, including Nigeria, showcasing the continent’s vibrant arts and culture scene.
