President Bola Tinubu vows to reform Nigeria Police force

President Bola Tinubu has affirmed his administration’s commitment to overhauling the Nigeria Police Force and improving the national security infrastructure.

Speaking at the “Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria” National Dialogue held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Tinubu, represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that state policing was not just a policy suggestion but a potential milestone in reshaping the nation’s law enforcement landscape.

Tinubu underscored that state police would enable tailored law enforcement responses to diverse community needs nationwide.

He acknowledged Nigeria’s complex security challenges and assured continuous development of effective strategies to tackle them.

“The commitment of my administration to reform the police force and enhance security at both the national and state levels is unwavering,” Tinubu stated.

He regarded the dialogue outcomes as pivotal for informing government actions towards police reform and achieving a safer Nigeria.

Tinubu urged participants to examine state policing comprehensively, considering its potential to enhance emergency response, address local challenges, and ensure accountability while safeguarding civil liberties.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan commended the event organizers, emphasizing the operational aspect of state police rather than its establishment, which he deemed already accepted. He advocated for effective management to prevent political interference.

Retired Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar emphasized transparent governance and citizen responsibility for peace, urging laws to maintain order and engagement of traditional rulers in peacekeeping.
