Nigeria loses Statistician General of the federation months after resumption

The Statistician-General of the Federation, Simon Harry’s death has been confirmed by the Director, Communication and Public Relations Department, Ichedi Joel, on Wednesday, in Abuja.

Joel explained that, “It is not a rumor anymore, the SG is dead, he died from an illness.”

Harry was said to have been indisposed on Saturday and was immediately given medical attention, shockingly his death I came barely 48 hours after the agency debunked rumours of his demise.

Harry was a Nigerian statistician, born on 15 March 1965 an indigene of Bassa Local Government Arear of Plateau state. He
was appointed by President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) as the Statistician-General of the Federation in August last year.

Harry joined the Federal Civil Service as a statistician II in 1992 in the then Federal Office of Statistics (FOS) and rose to the position of a substantive director of Statistics in 2019. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to gather a lot of experiences in various areas of statistical operations and management. In his early years as a Statistician.
Dr. Harry served as the officer in charge of Work Programming and Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation, Development of Statistical Strategies and Frameworks, Establishment of Statistical Branches in MDAs, Survey Design and Methodology, Building Systems for Data Management, Statistical Standards and Coordination, among others.

In the course of his civil service career, he has contributed to several reform initiatives including the reform of the then Federal Office of Statistics which was transformed into the current National Bureau of Statistics.

Harry’s other achievements include contributions to reforming Nigeria’s Statistical System which resulted in the creation and establishment of the state bureau of statistics at the sub-national level
