New report has revealed that the NFF has opted to stick with Augustine Eguavoen as caretaker coach for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers, ending speculation about a foreign managerial takeover. But is this continuity a bold move or a sign of unpreparedness?
Eguavoen, who briefly hinted at stepping aside after Nigeria’s draw in Rwanda, now faces the challenge of leading the Super Eagles against Libya. With fans divided, Clinton McDubus, a football analyst, believes sticking with Eguavoen is the safest bet for now—continuity over chaos.
Eguavoen’s journey back to the helm of the Super Eagles hasn’t been without its complications.
After leading the team to a solid 3-0 win over Benin Republic, followed by a frustrating 0-0 draw in Rwanda, the caretaker head coach hinted that his job might be over.
He told reporters at the Kigali Airport,
“It ends today. I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told about it.”
His comments threw fuel on the fire, as many believed the NFF was close to bringing in a new, highly anticipated foreign manager.

But Thursday’s announcement confirms that Eguavoen will indeed be tasked with steering the Super Eagles for at least the next two qualifiers against Libya. With Nigeria currently sitting atop Group D in the qualifiers, Eguavoen has some breathing room, but the pressure is undeniably on.
Many fans are questioning why the search for a foreign coach, which has been ongoing for months, has seemingly hit a dead end.
The question however now remains if the NFF’s decision could become permanent?
If Eguavoen sweeps through the qualifiers, the NFF might abandon their search for a foreign coach. However, McDubus warns that the caretaker boss must sharpen his in-game adaptability, especially against tactically superior teams.
