A  27-year-old doctor who currently works at Mumbai’s civic-run KEM hospital fell victim to fraud and lost Rs 1.40 lakh after placing an order for 25 plates of samosas.

The doctor, along with his colleagues, had organized a picnic at Karjat and decided to order samosas for their journey.

After finding an eatery’s contact number online, he placed the order. Upon calling the phone number, the person who answered requested an advance payment of Rs 1,500 for the 25 samosas, the officer told PTI.

Subsequently, the doctor received a Whatsapp message containing confirmation of the order and the bank account number to proceed with the online payment.

Trusting the process, the doctor transferred Rs 1,500 to the given account. The person on the other end then instructed the doctor to create a transaction ID for the payment.

Unfortunately, while following the given instructions, the doctor ended up losing a cumulative amount of Rs 1.40 lakh, with Rs 28,807 being the initial loss. The name of the eatery hasn’t been revealed by the official.

The incident occurred last week, between 8:30AM and 10:30AM. The victim filed a complaint at the Bhoiwada police station and a case was registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, as disclosed by the official.
